Wrist Pain: Prevention
To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome:
-
Avoid or reduce repetitive wrist movements (like typing, painting, driving, sewing, or playing racquetball).
-
Adjust your keyboard so that you do not have to bend your wrist upward while typing.
-
Keep your mousepad parallel to your keyboard so that you don't have to reach up and extend your wrist to use it.
-
Take frequent breaks from activities that require wrist movement.

Work with an occupational therapist.
To prevent gout attacks:
-
Limit alcohol intake.
-
Lose weight if you are overweight.
-
Drink plenty of water.
-
Reduce the amount of liver, ancovies, sardines, and herring that you eat.

Medications may be prescribed by your doctor.
Losing weight can help prevent osteoarthritis as well.
