Wrist Pain: Prevention

To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome:

  • Avoid or reduce repetitive wrist movements (like typing, painting, driving, sewing, or playing racquetball).
  • Adjust your keyboard so that you do not have to bend your wrist upward while typing.
  • Keep your mousepad parallel to your keyboard so that you don't have to reach up and extend your wrist to use it.
  • Take frequent breaks from activities that require wrist movement.
  • Work with an occupational therapist.

To prevent gout attacks:

  • Limit alcohol intake.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Reduce the amount of liver, ancovies, sardines, and herring that you eat.
  • Medications may be prescribed by your doctor.

Losing weight can help prevent osteoarthritis as well.
