Why is the Test Performed?
The test is performed to detect congenital or postnatal Toxoplasmosis or to screen pregnant women for the presence of antibodies to Toxoplasma. The presence of antibodies before pregnancy probably protects a fetus against congenital Toxoplasmosis. Antibodies developed during pregnancy may indicate possible congenital infection with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion or birth defects.
