Treatment
Treatment is based on determining the underlying cause of the problem and correcting it, if possible. Many treatments have not been thoroughly studied. It is generally recommended that patients take conservative, simple steps at first.
Reconstructive surgery of the jaw is rarely required. Abnormalities in the alignment of the jaw can be corrected by various devices applied by dentists or orthodontists. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) help reduce inflammation in the jaw stemming from arthritis or other causes of inflammation.
Muscle spasms caused by tension may be relieved by moist heat packs to the face, soft foods that require less chewing, muscle relaxant medications, or mouth splints to prevent clenching or teeth grinding at night. Pain may be relieved by cold packs to the face. Relaxation exercises may help, although this is debatable. Biofeedback to prevent teeth grinding has had mixed results.
It may be worthwhile to get the advice of more than one health care provider, and to seek providers who specifically treat TMJ.
