Calling Your Health Care Provider
The initial symptoms of mono feel very much like a typical viral illness. It is not necessary to contact a health care provider unless your symptoms last longer than 10 days or you develop the following symptoms:
- Severe sore throat or swollen tonsils, which may lead you to stop drinking fluids and become dehydrated
- Difficulty breathing
- Sharp, sudden pain in your abdomen which could mean a ruptured spleen
- Severe headache or stiff neck
- Persistent and unusually high fevers (more 101.5 Fahrenheit)
- Yellow discoloration of your eyes or skin
- Severe weakness in the arm or legs
If any of these symptoms occur, you should be evaluated by your health care provider immediately or call the local emergency number (such as 911).
