Do fibroid tumors have to be removed?

Answer:
If you do not have symptoms (such as excessive vaginal bleeding, pelvic pressure, abdominal enlargement, abdominal pain, or pain with intercourse), and if the fibroid is not growing rapidly, then removal is probably not necessary. In many cases, treatment is not needed at all. (However, frequent pelvic exams, usually every 6 months, are recommended to note any changes in the fibroid(s)). Hormonal treatment, with drugs such as nafarelin and leuprolide (Lupron), may reduce the size of the fibroid(s), however, side effects can include menopausal symptoms and the fibroids will regrow if hormone therapy is discontinued.
