Breast Lump: Prevention
Breast cancer screening is an important way to find breast cancer early, when it is most easily treated and cured. The guidelines are as follows:
-
If you are over age 20, you should do a monthly self-breast exam. Learn the proper technique.
-
If you are over age 20, you should have a complete breast exam by your doctor at least every 3 years. If you are over 40, you should have this exam every year.
-
In the United States, yearly screening mammograms are recommended for all women over the age of 50. Women between the ages of 40 and 50 should have mammograms at least every other year.
The American Cancer Society distributes a booklet demonstrating how to do self-breast exams.
