Arterial Insufficiency
Definition
Arterial insufficiency is inadequate blood flow through arteries. It can affect many different parts of the body. If brain arteries are involved, it can cause symptoms of stroke. The specific symptoms can indicate, to some extent, which artery is involved.
Anterior inferior cerebellar artery syndrome involves symptoms of inflammation or occlusion (blockage) of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery. Basilar insufficiency involves one of the carotid artery branches called the posterior cerebral artery.
One of the most common causes of arterial insufficiency is atherosclerotic disease.
